JUDY MILES

As a fine arts student in college, Judy Miles of Vancouver, WA., studied drawing, oils, acrylics and watercolor with Charles Ransom.

"Through the next 18 years I consistently reached for the pencil for my greatest satisfaction. Drawing fulfills something in me that the other methods of producing art does not."

Miles attended a Colored Pencil Society of America (CPSA) show that she says "changed my life.

"What I saw there was intoxicating! I had read about colored pencil, but seeing the quality of this art left me weak kneed. In 1996, I was compelled to get my artwork off the backburner where it had been lukewarm for years.

Since that life-changing exhibition, she has taken classes and workshops in color pencil techniques from Dyanne Loati, Gary Greene, Ann Kullberg, Pat Averill and Vera Curnow.

"The diversity that color pencil yields excites me; using colored paper fascinates me. Colored pencil is clean, dry, portable and doesn’t need “proper ventilation” for safety," she says.

Miles says each art piece is a learning experience.

"I start projects with sketches, plans and a finished product in mind and, sometimes when my left-brain isn’t looking, my hand grabs unexpected colors that my conscious self would never have allowed.

"When I come to my senses, I am surprised at the results and wonder when and why I deviated from the original concept. I am convinced that each picture has a life of its own. The picture takes over and, if I let it happen, it is good for me. It is great to be out of control!
